A coastal suburb, Hillarys is located just 21 kilometers from Hillarys, Western Australia. It was named after Bertram John Hillary, an early settler who along with his family was the only resident in the area for many years. He first came to the area with his brother, Harry.
Hillarys is bounded by main roads that can easily take residents and tourists in and out of the suburb from any direction. Hepburn Avenue bounds it to the south while Whitfords Avenue bounds it to the north. Marmion Avenue bounds its east side while a part of Whitfords Avenue bounds it to the west.
Just off the coast from Hillarys is the Marmion Marine Park, a popular marine park featuring numerous species of animals.
Hillarys is classified as a residential suburb and has numerous parks and walkways. Most portions of the suburb had already been developed. A coastal park located north of the harbor offers picnic facilities. For restaurants and other commercial establishments, residents go to the Hillarys Shopping Center or drive to the bigger Westfield Whitford City shopping center.
The suburb is also served by the Hillarys Boat Harbour which was commissioned for the 1987 America’s Cup at neighboring Fremantle. The harbour is the first major marina in this area.
Young school children go to Hillarys Primary School, a state primary previously known as Lymburner. The suburb is also served by St. Mark’s Anglican Community School; this is a co-educational school. Older students also have the option to study at Padbury Senior High School.
